Why laundry prices are hard to compare

Laundry services in Brisbane price in three different ways, and they don't line up neatly:

• Per load — a flat price for a machine-sized load
• Per kilo — your bag is weighed and you pay by weight
• Per item or per bag — a price list for shirts, sheets, doonas and so on

None of these is a trick. But it means the headline number on one website can't be compared with the headline number on another. You have to work out the total for *your* washing.

The four numbers that decide your real cost

1. The minimum order. Almost every pickup service has one, because a driver has to come to your door twice. Ask what it is.

2. The pickup and delivery fee. Some services include it. Some add a fee to every order. On a small order, a delivery fee can be a big slice of the bill, so check before you book.

3. The price beyond the minimum. This is what matters for a family. The first load is rarely the expensive one.

4. Extras. Separate loads for lights and darks, express turnaround, bulky items. Ask how each is charged.

What we charge

We price per load because it's the easiest to predict. You know roughly how many machine loads you do at home.

• First 2 loads: $66 including GST — our minimum booking
• Each extra load: $27.50 including GST
• One load is up to 5kg
• Pickup and delivery: free, every time
• No fuel surcharge, no contract

That makes 3 loads $93.50, 4 loads $121 and 5 loads $148.50.

New customers pay $33 for their first 2 loads — the second load is free.

What a normal household pays

A couple usually does 2 to 3 loads a week: $66 to $93.50.

A family of four usually does 4 to 5 loads a week: $121 to $148.50.

A king-size doona generally counts as a load on its own. If lights and darks need washing separately, that can count as separate loads — we confirm the load count at pickup so there's no surprise on the invoice.

How that compares with doing it yourself

A laundromat is cheaper in dollars — roughly $20 to $26 in machine fees for two loads. What it costs you is the trip there, the wait, and the trip back. Doing it at home costs you the same hours, spread across the week.

Pickup laundry isn't the cheapest way to get clean clothes. It's the way that gives you the time back. Whether that's worth $66 is a fair question, and only you can answer it.
