What gym towels really need (and why a domestic machine kills them)

Gym towels go through more hot washes than anything else in a fitness studio. Here's why your domestic machine is killing them — and what proper commercial washing looks like.

Why gym towels wear out so fast

Gym towels live a harder life than almost any other piece of business linen. They get:

  • Sweat-soaked daily
  • Wiped on grip-rough rubber and metal
  • Sometimes thrown straight into a bag with shoes
  • Washed at high temperatures multiple times a week to keep them hygienic

A typical gym towel from a budget pack — $3-$5 a unit — lasts about 3 months of full daily rotation before it goes thin, grey, and starts shedding lint. That's a hidden cost a lot of fitness operators don't track.

What kills towels in a domestic machine

If you're running gym towels through a domestic washing machine — common for boutique studios that don't have commercial equipment — the towels are getting hammered harder than the machine is designed for.

Three things wear them out fast:

1. Overloading. A domestic drum that's perfect for a family-of-four's laundry is over-stuffed with a gym day's towels. The agitation gets unbalanced, fibres get crushed, lint sheds. 2. Temperature mismatch. To kill bacteria you need a properly hot cycle — 60°C+. Most domestic machines technically have that setting but the heating element struggles to maintain it across a full load. 3. Detergent overdose. Operators tend to compensate for the smell with extra detergent. Excess detergent doesn't rinse out properly in a domestic machine, leaves residue, stiffens the towel.

The result: towels that look bad within months, smell bad within weeks, and need replacing more often than they should.

What commercial washing does differently

A commercial-grade wash gets the temperature right, sizes the load correctly, and uses the right amount of detergent and the right rinse cycles. Towels come out:

  • Properly disinfected (consistent 60°C+ wash)
  • Lint-low (correctly sized loads, proper agitation)
  • Soft and absorbent (proper rinse, no detergent residue)

We use machines built for the volume and the temperature gym towels need. Towels last meaningfully longer because they're not being abused in equipment that wasn't designed for them.

What it costs

Most boutique gyms and fitness studios we work with book either daily (high-volume bootcamps with 30+ members per session) or twice-weekly (smaller studios). The minimum 2-load booking is $60 + GST flat; for high-volume daily pickup, you're typically looking at $25 + GST per additional load beyond the first 2.

For a studio running 50 towels a day, that's usually around 1 load per day with us. Compared to:

  • $200-$400 every 3 months replacing burnt-out towels
  • The staff time on the domestic-machine cycles
  • The energy and water cost

The maths usually works out in favour of outsourcing.

Next step

Try a 2-week pickup arrangement and compare. Track how the towels look at the end of two weeks of commercial washing vs. the previous fortnight on your domestic machine. The difference is visible.

Book a pickup here — first 2 loads $60 + GST, $25 + GST per additional. Free pickup and delivery across Brisbane.
